First Finger Foods for Babies

finger foodsNow that your baby has been introduced to solids and is getting the hang of eating, Plunket suggest that from 8-9 months your baby may enjoy finger foods. These are thin pieces of food that your baby can hold on to, like ripe fruit and cooked vegetables…ideally things that can squish between their fingers!

The simplest finger foods are those that simply need cutting up or unwrapping and no cooking:

Pieces of ripe peach, nectarine, pear, plum, kiwifruit and banana

Grated or strips of mild cheese like colby or edam

  • Cool peeled cucumber (can help to soothe sore teething gums)
  • Sweet, ripe strawberries (not too many as you will get an evil nappy)
  • Soft pitta bread strips
  • Crunchy bread sticks
  • Mandarin orange segments
  • Pineapple rings
  • Raisins or dried cranberries
  • Strips of luncheon sausage
  • Wine or arrowroot biscuits
  • Gingernuts (great for sore teething gums but beware as they get very sticky)
  • Processed cheese triangles
  • Avocado
  • Seedless grapes cut in half
  • Sandwiches with sweet or savoury fillings like Marmite, jam or cheese.

There are many things you eat that you can give your baby as finger foods. It’s quite fun when you are all eating together for your baby to eat the same food as they get more involved in family mealtimes:

  • Cooked pasta shapes (without sauce)
  • Cooked vegetables like broccoli, courgette, cauliflower, carrot, yams.
  • Fish fingers
  • Sliced meatballs
  • Cooked potato and kumara
  • Cooked noodles
  • Toast

When it comes to cleaning up the mess, don’t forget that New World stocks a wide ranging of cleaning products and cloths!

Remember to avoid small hard foods as these could make your baby choke. Stay with your baby when they are eating and make sure they are sitting down to avoid the risk of choking.
