Why should you exercise?

Weight management and disease prevention are the top two reasons why people a) embark on an exercise routine and b) try to keep with it. Aside from these obvious motivators, there are wider benefits to regular physical activity. Here are a few:
- The feel good factor of exercise is well documented. Some GP’s are actually prescribing exercise as part of a treatment plan for Chronic Depression and Anxiety.
- Not limited to just Depression and Anxiety exercise can also help with relieving back pain, easing the symptoms associated to premenstrual cramps and menopause and can help us live longer too!
- Particularly relevant for those with children, role modelling regular exercise will encourage children to develop healthy habits and participate in regular physical activity. With child obesity at an all time high, if no intervention is made, as high as 80% of these children will continue to be overweight as adults.
- Exercise need not be something that is performed solo. It can be a chance to spend time together as a couple, a family, and is also a great opportunity to have some special one on one time with the kids. Teaching a child to learn how to swim or play a sport is a great example of this and will facilitate strengthening that relationship.
- Cognitive and Mental Enhancement. Exercise can increase clarity – it has been proven that those who engage in physical activity have better performances in tests implying decision making, memory and problem solving. This applies to both adults and children.
- Engaging in regular exercise can result in a better night’s sleep – quicker sleep onset, longer duration and a more ‘rested’ feeling upon waking.
