Sugar in yoghurts
Our lovely nutritionist Rebecca had a question about the sugar content of yoghurts. It went like this, "My daughter is ten and a half months old and I’m wondering what yoghurt would be best for her. I recently bought some ‘Meadow Fresh 4 Kids calci strong’. She likes it and I note it has 11.2g sugar per 100g which seems quite low to me in comparison with other yoghurts. Would it be OK for her?"
Rebecca answered, "Thanks for your question. As I'm sure you're aware yoghurt is a great food for this age as it really is packed with protein and calcium. It's also versatile as a snack or as a meal in itself with fruit and baby cereal. Meadow Fresh 4 Kids calci strong is a suitable choice due to the high calcium levels and relatively low sugar levels.
Yoplait Petit Miams are another product you could try. These come in three flavours and have a sugar content of approximately 13g per 100g which isn't dissimilar to the Meadow Fresh yoghurt at 11.2g. Although they are marketed at children greater than one year of age, there is no harm in introducing them to your ten and a half year old. However if you were concerned you could always try their Baby First Yoghurt which targets children greater than 6 months. The sugar levels are 13.4g per 100g."
