Finding Time to Exercise
One thing that has changed a lot since becoming a Mum is the sharp decline in time I now have for myself.
Prior to having a baby I worked as a Personal Trainer - so health and fitness was a major part of my life. I had time to exercise as and when I liked, if I didn't feel like it in the morning, it was easy enough for me to find another time during the day when I could do it.
Now I don't quite have that luxury.
There is a very small window now in which I can exercise - and if I don't feel like it at that time, or feel like I have the energy to do it, I have to miss it for the day. Pre-baby a missed workout would have me feeling guilty for the entire day and would often lead to me inhaling close to my bodyweight in chocolate to help with the shame! I am pleased to report that these days, I am a lot less hard on myself.
When establishing an exercise routine, especially if you are starting back into exercise, it is important to set yourself up to succeed. Setting yourself unrealistic targets will only set you up for failure and leave you dejected and reaching for the chocolate bikkies! Exercise goals need to be realistic and easy for you to fit into your life. If you are a person with three kids, working a 30+ hour week, carting kids around to weekend sport and activities as well as feeding and running the household .. trying to exercise five times a week an hour at a time is just not going to happen. Exercising 20 minutes three or four times a week - that can happen.
Longer or more frequent workouts does not necessarily mean better results. Intensity is the key when trying to build fitness and lose weight and you don't need to join a gym either where travel time can cost you 20 minutes! There are a tonne of exercises / workouts you can do in the privacy of your own home or outside and still achieve great results.
If you need a few ideas, post your questions in the comments and I will do my best to help you out.
Sometimes for me, even a half hour walk with my wee girl in the buggy is enough to get the endorphins going.
